There is also much in it to make me think how massive a political failure the Iraq war – and to a counnterinsurgency extent, the war in Afghanistan as well – represents. Establish contact with the population, control its movements in order to cut off its links with the guerillas. Replace the softs and the incompetents, give full support to the active leaders.
Inspired by his military experiences as a French military officer and attache in China, Greece, Southeast Asia, and Algeria, the countreinsurgency realized the “need for a compass” in the suppression of insurgency, and he set out to “define the laws of counterinsurgency warfare, to deduce from them its principles, and to outline the corresponding strategy and tactics. It is human nature and people are always busy with their own lives to worry about the rest.
Published August 30th by Praeger Security International first published I’d highly recommend it for anyone interested in the topic. The first law is that the population is paramount.

While some parts of the book are obviously dated, the core of the theory is still applicable today, and can be witnessed in Iraq A quick and easy read don’t be fooled by how long it took me; I went through part of it for a paper and then decided recently to read through it’s entirety for anyone interested in insurgency warfare. Yet whatever their differences, both have effective advice for the counterinsurgent, and both of the books should be used in conjunction when planning and preparing for counterinsurgency operations.
