This novel recounts a fictional libel trial in England, where a Polish surgeon Dr. This masterpiece won a half dozen Emmys is not merely a lost miniseries from the 70s, but rather it is the first miniseries of its kind, the template from which all later efforts came.
Uris masterfully combines fictional characters with lein historical figures, and it is, at times, difficult to tell the difference. Uris didn’t “show” anything; he just “told” me what to believe, and no way did I believe Kelno’s transformation from human to evil reincarnated. The accent, which was supposed to be an American Southern gentlemen’s accent came off as a cross between a gunslinger in a spaghetti western, a parody of Foghorn Leghorn cartoons, and an old time evangelist.
It’s based on a true story about a trial of a doctor who was tried for war crimes by doing surgery on Jewish people in concentration camps. It creeps in at the most unusual times when both men lament vii lapse in morals, in education, and complain about the protests of the 60’s, and even the way young people dress, talk, live – even the music is assailed. It made me really sad.

The first half felt kind of slow, setting up the courtroom drama, which started about halfway in. It’s a little insane. Kelno has denied his involvement in sadistic practices, and asserts vji worked hard to save prisoners, at great personal risk. The storytelling is superb, and these two stories were so compelling, so painful, and so true to history even though they are fictional accounts of those times.
Not sure where you can find it these days, but if you run across it, you won’t be disappointed. Everyone in the room raised his hand.

You’ll be reading a scene and then, bang, one sentence later that’s over and years have passed. This one was based on a novel by and real life event in the life of Leon Uris.
Eventually, though, he finds that he is compelled to write about the Holocaust and when he does, his reference to Hopkins in the book sparks a libel suit lleon the now-decorated doctor.

The central questions of the series are DID Kelno work for the Nazis and IF he did, was he the benevolent man he claims to have been or a monster who was NOT forced to commit atrocities. The setup is brilliant, and though the first third of the book dwells on Kelno’s past history, and how he worked in various parts of the world, helping and treating the poor and indigent – and Cady’s background, too, and how he went from the quiet son of a boisterous father to writing fame – this is the least interesting part of the book.
The film gets a huge shot of class and talent from the excellent Remick though her role peters out as the film continues and from the appearances of several renowned British character actors, notably Quayle and Evans.
It was a worldwide best-seller, translated into a dozen languages, and was made into a feature film instarring Paul Newman, directed by Otto Preminger, as well as into a short-lived Broadway musical 12 previews, 19 performances in I almost couldn’t stomach it, and very, very rarely do I give up on a book, but it was all I could do not to skim the pages two at a time to get to the end.
