I would think any good writer must be able to do those things as requirements — but he has to go beyond that and maybe even have a point to the story. Carver is a landlocked Hemingway in fact. Not a book I would recommend to anyone. I had carvwr feeling that in order to write this book, the author kept flipping through his tv amkr, and writing whatever nonsense appeared on the screen.

He married at 19, started a series of menial jobs and his own career of ‘full-time drinking as a serious pursuit’, a career that would eventually kill him. In some weird way, I’ll always be at a stranger’s porch dancing in the middle of the night. Carver’s short stories are wonderful examples, although I admit that I would have liked them twice as much if they were twice as long.

This reaction coupled with an interest as a struggling writer to see how one can write effectively and minimally I pulled out Raymond Carver again and sat him on my to be read pile of aomr. And so se are untrue stories.

A few of the others in the collection that stood out to me are: Maybe I’m losing my mind and everything just whooshed over my head and I didn’t get it, but my reaction to most of this book was either “I don’t get it?????????
